MORNING

Start Early at Palo Duro Canyon State Park

To start of the Adventurer’s Guide to Canyon, arrive early to Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the morning to beat the heat. Grab a park map at the Visitor Center and ask about any trail conditions.

Hike the Lighthouse Trail

This 5.7-mile round-trip trail is moderately challenging and offers incredible views, leading you to the iconic Lighthouse rock formation. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and snacks. Bikers and hikers are both welcome.

LUNCH

Eat at the Sad Monkey Mercantile

Just outside Palo Duro Canyon’s gate is a local favorite, Sad Monkey Mercantile. They offer everything for the happy camper: food trucks, restaurant, bar, coffee shop, grocery store, camping gear, and “Panhandle Proud” merchandise. It’s dog friendly, and you might even get up close to an iconic Texas longhorn grazing the surrounding pastures.

AFTERNOON

Take an Afternoon Hike

We recommend a shaded trail in the heat of the day. Our favorite trails are Big Cave, Rock Garden, and Sunflower for families.

EVENING

Dinner on the Square

Head back to the Historic Downtown Square in Canyon for a casual dinner at Asian-fusion favorite Sayakomarns.

Texas Outdoor Musical (Seasonal)

After dinner, if you’re visiting in the summer, don’t miss the famous Texas Outdoor Musical, held at the outdoor amphitheater in Palo Duro Canyon. It’s an entertaining show about Texas history, complete with live music, dancing, and fireworks. It attracts people from all over the world so advanced tickets are required.

Coffee & Pastries at Palace Coffee Company

Grab a morning coffee at Palace Coffee Company, known for its artisan brews and friendly atmosphere. Grab some pastries there or for a heartier breakfast visit local-gem, Buff’s.

Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum

Explore the massive museum located on the campus of West Texas A&M University. With exhibits covering everything from pioneer life to art and paleontology, it’s the perfect spot to soak up regional history.

Lunch at Joe Taco

After the museum, grab a bite at Joe Taco, a vibrant Mexican restaurant with a wide range of tacos, burritos, and Texas-Mex specialties. If the weather permits, we recommend sitting on the patio.

AFTERNOON

Horseback Ride or Jeep Tour (call ahead, tickets required)

For a unique perspective on the Canyon, consider a guided horseback ride or Jeep Tour through the canyon. 1hr, 2hr, and 3hr options are available as you explore the picturesque backlands of the canyon not accessible to the general public.

Dinner at Feldman’s Wrong Way Diner

For a casual menu with something for everyone try Feldman’s. you can’t go wrong with the Tortuga’s Chicken or a classic burger.

Relax at Pondaseta Brewing Company

Located in the recently renovated, historic Santa Fe Train Depot building on 2nd Ave, Pondaseta offers a comfortable space to enjoy local beer, food and community.
